Chandigarh rocked by several shocking incidents

In recent weeks, the City Beautiful has been rocked by several shocking incidents.

A 10-year-old girl was found to be carrying a 26 week foetus after being repeatedly raped by her maternal uncle, who it seems had attempted to molest another niece too.

The 10- year- old who is herself a minor, physically not ready to nurture and deliver a baby, will have to give birth to a child as per a team of PGI doctors and the Court judgment.

The family, friends, teachers and neighbors- no one realised the trauma the child was undergoing. She didn’t have the courage to tell anyone. What does this say about our society?

Despite the counsellors being mandatory in schools, despite our close- knit family system, how could this happen?

The family had to ask the social welfare people to be protected from the media.

Shilpi Pattar, Sub Divisional Magistrate (East) and her husband were arrested for demanding and accepting a bribe. The SDM is a Haryana Civil Service (HCS) officer on deputation with UT Chandigarh Administration.

In another shameful incident, a daughter of a senior Haryana IAS officer was stalked and an attempt was made to kidnap her by the son of a prominent Haryana BJP leader and his friend, both of them law students. This unfortunate incident has come as a ‘ godsend’ opportunity for political parties and politicians of different hues to air their opinion and viewpoint.A political hullabaloo is being raised with the opposition parties demanding the resignation of the BJP leader while a few of Haryana BJP activists defending the leader! The matter has acquired national centre-stage with social activists treating it as a case of defending rights of women.

Now the muck is being raked up and the episode has sent shockwaves all over the nation and even abroad.

The girl is educated and belongs to a privileged family. She was apparently returning from her job as a DJ. She summoned police help by dialling 100 and without losing the presence of mind gave a minute-to-minute account of her location. The police followed and managed to arrest the accused.

The girl and her father courageously shared the traumatic experience on the social media. The father and daughter insisted on filing a case and are determined to follow it up.

Now it is being alleged that the Chandigarh Police went soft in the matter with some sections making it a non-bailable offence being omitted and releasing the accused on bail without presenting them in court.

Even lawyers have come out in support and a few even say that Section 307 (attempt to murder) should be added to the FIR.

We must applaud the presence of mind and the bravery of the girl who prevented things from going worse.
