Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram and former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor has been summoned by a Delhi Court to appear as an accused on July 7 in the alleged suicide of his wife Sunanda Pushkar in 2014. In his order, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal said, ” I take cognizance of the charges of abetment of suicide of the late Sunanda Pushkar and committing cruelty upon her by Shashi Tharoor.”
The Magistrate further said,”There is sufficient material at this stage to proceed against Tharoor.” He further said that he had gone through and perused the charge sheet and documents filed by the police. The Delhi Police have charged Mr. Tharoor under Sections 498 A (husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.
It may be recalled that Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a posh hotel here in 2014.
In a related development, Mr.Tharoor tweeted a statement describing the charges as “preposterous and baseless.”
