K.R. Ramesh Kumar, Congress MLA, was unanimously elected the Karnataka Assembly Speaker at the Vidhana Soudha here on Friday. In a swift political development, the BJP, which had earlier decided to contest the Speaker’s post, announced that it was withdrawing its nominee Suresh Kumar.
Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa said in the House that the BJP withdrew it’s candidate as we wanted the election to be unanimous in order to maintain the dignity of the Speaker’s post.”
The newly-elected Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy who heads a coalition government of the Congress and the JD (S) is facing the floor test now.
