The Department of Pediatric Surgery, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, organised 5th Annual Conference of Research section of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons at Advanced Pediatric Centre, PGIMER.The theme of the conference was “Research Update in Basic and Clinical Pediatric Surgery”.
Prof. Ram Samujh, Head, Department of Pediatric Surgery, PGIMER, and Prof. J K Mahajan were chairperson and organising secretary of the conference, which was attended by 60 delegates from all over India. The conference was inaugurated by Prof. Jagat Ram, Director, PGI. Prof D K Gupta, Head, Department of Pediatric Surgery, AIIMS, New Delhi was the keynote speaker. Prof Manu R Sood, Chief Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, USA was international faculty for the conference and delivered an online address on advancements in the medical management of intestinal problems of children.
Various experts spoke on genetics in surgery, stem cell applications, planning of research, evidence-based medicine, medical databases, application of biostatics, fetal diagnosis and maternal guidance and ethical concerns on research in children. The conference concluded with the presentation of postdoctoral and other research work by the trainees and fellows. Senior Research Associate Dr. Enono Yhoshu and Dr Reyaz Wani of PGIMER Chandigarh were awarded the 2nd prize in best paper and best postdoctoral dissertation category respectively.
Prof C. M. Habibullah Oration Award for Prof. Chetana Vaishnavi
Prof. Chetana Vaishnavi from the Department of Gastroenterology, PGIMER, Chandigarh delivered the Prof C. M. Habibullah Oration and received the award for the same at the recently concluded 58th Annual conference of the Indian Society for Gastroenterologists at Bhubaneswar, Orissa.
She has been actively working in the area of gastrointestinal infections, particularly on Clostridium difficile, foodborne pathogens, biofilms in biliary stents, C-reactive protein, fecal lactoferrin, fecal myeloperoxidase etc. for which she was recognized by the ISG.
Earlier Prof. Vaishnavi also received several awards inclusive of ISG-Zydus Alidac Oration and the Dr CGS Iyer Oration by the ICMR for significant contribution to medical science. She has produced and edited two multi-author books on ‘Infections of the Gastrointestinal System’ (Jaypee Publisher, 2013) and ‘Gastrointestinal Tract Infections’ (Paragon International Publisher, 2008). She did collaborative research work with national and international organizations. She is the Founder and Chairperson of the Gastrointestinal Infection Society of India as well as the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Gastrointestinal Infections.
Apart from this she is also a Member of several National and International Scientific Societies and has delivered invited lectures and chaired sessions at national and international conferences. She has published over 165 well-cited research papers and 19 chapters in books.
Swachhta Week under Swachh Indira Colony campaign
A sensitization meeting cum awareness generation session for key stakeholders of Swachhta Week was organized by Urban Health Training Centre, Indira Colony run by School of Public Health, PGIMER in collaboration with Public Health Development Society (PHDS), Indira Colony, and Chandigarh ahead of weeklong cleanliness drive in the colony.
The session was organized with the objective to sensitize the government, non-governmental and community members to the sanitation drive under Swachhta Week to be carried out in the colony ahead of Swachhta Survey by Government of India.The chief guest of the session was Jitendra Yadav, Municipal Commissioner; Chandigarh who talked about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and its importance in Smart City Initiative. He emphasized the need for every citizen to take responsibility for the cleanliness of their locality and promised to extend his full support and co-operation. He promised to provide additional manpower, waste collection dustbins and Sahaj Safai Kendra in the Colony.
Dr JS Thakur, Professor, Community Medicine, PGIMER spoke about the various initiatives being taken under Swachh Indira Colony Campaign launched two years back and requested all the community members for compliance to the municipal waste segregation rules.
Dr PS Bhatti, Medical Officer of Health, MC, Chandigarh spoke about the “Swachhta application” and requested all the community members to download it and put any cleanliness related issue there for timely corrective action.
